Inspired by an effect from Transformers (2007), this effect was accomplished almost entirely through the VEX coding language in Houdini. This was my first project that heavily relied on VEX, so it helped to push and grow my scripting capabilities. This was then brought into Unreal Engine for layout, lighting, and rendering. The background particle system was created using Niagara.
